Victoria Terminus (Shivaji Terminus)

 
images/victoria.jpgVictoria Terminus holds the distinction of being declared a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, in the year 2004. The terminus has been built as per the Venetian Gothic style of architecture and dates back to the year 1888. Its architectural style also reflects the influence of traditional Indian architecture. One can find the interiors of the terminus adorned with wood carving, tiles, ornamental iron and brass railings, etc. There are also grills for the ticket offices and railing for the grand staircases.

The terminal was built over 10 years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay.

Building of the Gateway Of India was started in 1911 to commemorate the visit of the King George V, and Queen Mary to Mumbai in the same year. Today, the monument has become one of the most important historical monuments of the Mumbai. The two of the most famous hotels of Mumbai, Taj Mahal Palace and Taj Intercontinental, are located close to the gateway, being another important reason to make the place popular.

Versova Beach

Versova BeachVersova Beach is counted amongst the popular attractions of the Mumbai city of India. It is situated towards the north of Juhu Beach and comes under the district of Greater Mumbai. Infact, Versova Beach is regarded as an extension of Juhu only, with only a creek separating the two. The lashing waves of the Arabian Sea add noise to this otherwise silent beach during daytime. The best time to visit this amazing beach is between September and May.

Though it is thronged throughout the year, this particular period witnesses exceptional rush. This is because in these months, the humidity is at its lowest level in Bombay. The cool breeze that kisses your cheek at the Versova Beach further adds to the pleasure. The beach also serves as home to Koli community - the largest fishing community of the city. One of the best times in the day to visit it is early in the morning, when you will see fishermen ready to go into the sea.

Chowpatty beach

Juhu beach

Located 18-kms north of the city centre, it's a major holiday beach on the shores of Arabian Sea. Juhu is one of the posh localities of Mumbai and where one can find bungalows of the famous Bollywood film stars. It's also a favourite shooting spot among the filmmakers and one may witness film shootings in and around this area are also held over here.

Ajanta Ellora caveAjanta Caves : Lying deep within the Sahyadri hills, cut into the curved mountain side, above the Waghora river, are the awesome Ajanta group of caves, captivating tourists from all over. It was only in the 19th century, when a group of British officers on a tiger hunt discovered this artistry of yore. The caves at Ajanta depict the story of Buddhism, spanning the period from 200 BC to 650 AD.

Ellora Caves : The Ellora caves, 34 in number, are carved into the sides of a basaltic hill, 30 kms from Aurangabad. The finest specimens of cave - temple architecture, they house elaborate facades and exquisitely adorned interiors. These structures representing the three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, were carved during the 350 AD to 700 AD period.

Aurangabad cavesAurangabad was founded in 1610, on the site of a village, Khirki by Malik Ambar - the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II.

Aurangabad was an important seat of the Mughal Empire for a short period. Thus, the city has many monuments speaking volumes about the grandeur of the Mughal architecture. Marine Drive adjacent to the Arabian sea comprises 6 lanes running along the sea coast. The Marine drive is a naturally formed bay on the Arabian sea. At the northern end of Mumbai Marine drive lies the famous Chowpatty Beach where a wide variety of snacks and tasty food is available to the strolling visitors. The Promenade also known by the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, is a major attraction of Marine drive Mumbai. The Promenade is lined with beautiful palm trees that enhance the beauty of the place. The visitors can enjoy the wonderful views of the setting sun at twilight.

Elephanta caves

Elephanta cavesElephanta caves, situated on Gharapuri Islands 15 miles from the Gateway of India in Mumbai, dates back to 6th century A.D. It is famous for the statues of Shiva and Parvati. The most striking statue of Trimurti, Shiva in the three moods as the Creator, the Destroyer and the Preserver is a masterpiece by itself.

It was the Portuguese who named the caves The Elephanta caves after the statue of an elephant which is seen close to landing area. Many of the carved figures have been unfortunately destroyed by Portuguese iconoclast. Yet the sublime beauty of these sculptures remains intact. These caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva and consist of affluent sculptures.

Crawford Market

images/Crawford Market, Mumbai (Bombay )Named after Bombay's first municipal commissioner, Arthur Crawford, the Crawford Market is at the northern end of the old British part of the town, and faces the crowded inner city. An elegant covered market, it dominates the skyline with its clock tower and steeple. The cavernous spaces inside are divided into sections for fruits, vegetables and meat.

The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. The friezes on the outside walls and the stone fountains inside were designed by Lockwood Kipling. It was the main wholesale market for fruits in Bombay until March 1996, when the wholesale traders were relocated to New Bombay.

HANGING GARDENS

images/hanginggarden-mumbai.jpgHanging Gardens also known as Ferozeshah Mehta Gardens are the perfectly manicured terraced gardens on the slopes of the Malabar Hill, just opposite the Kamala Nehru Park.

Providing a calming view of Sunset over the Arabian Sea, the Hanging Gardens have been carved into the shapes of animals. The park, which was laid out in 1881 over Bombay's main reservoir, owes its name to the renowned barrister Pherozshah Mehta.

The hanging gardens, parched on the slope of the Malabar Hills looks south from Malabar Hills, over Colaba. A unique feature of the Hanging Gardens is that the hedges are cut in shapes of different animals. Apart from that, there is a beautiful flower clock in the Hanging Gardens which also attracts a lot of people. The garden is built over three reservoirs that are pumped to supple the drinking water of the city.

MANI BHAvAN

MANI BHAVANThe Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya is a quaint Gujarati-style house in Mumbai where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934. The three-story home is now a Gandhi Museum that preserves the spirit of the man who put his nation before himself.

On the terrace, a bronze plaque marks the site of the tent in which Gandhi was arrested in January 1932. He also used to sleep and say his prayers on this terrace.

Inside the house is a library of Gandhi-related works (about 50,000 books and periodicals), as well as displays of photographs, posters, slogans, and other items that document and explain Gandhi's legendary life.

Shirdi

ShirdiShirdi is is a village north-east of Mumbai and has an extensive temple complex devoted to Shirdi Sai Baba. It is located by road on Ahmednagar-Manmad State Highway No.10 at 83 kilometres from Ahmednagar, and 15 kilometres from Kopargaon.

This is the place where Sacred Body of Baba is resting in Samadhi. The articles handled by Baba are preserved & displayed here in a special showroom. All rituals consisting of Pooja. Abhishek & daily four Aratis are performed here. The Samadhi Mandir of Shri Sai Baba was actually owned by a millionaire from Nagpur and a famous Sai devotee Shreemant Gopalrao, also known as 'Butti Wada'.The first floor of the temple has the pictures depicting the life of the saint. The temple opens on 5 AM with morning prayers and close down at 10 PM with night prayers.

Flora Fountain

It was constructed by the Agri-Horticultural society of Western India and was carefully designed by R. Norman Shaw. Crafted out of imported Portland stone, Flora Fountain was erected at a total sum of Rs. 47,000.

The Flora Fountain was erected by the Agri-Horticultural society of Western India. It was originally meant to be named after Sir Bartle Frere, then governor of Bombay. However, the name was changed before the fountain was unveiled. It stood in the center of the town as it then was, but now this area is the heart of the business district of the town. This is the very heart of Mumbai, circumscribed by stately colonial buildings standing like proud old sentinels of a bygone era.

Madh Island

Another attraction on Madh Island Beach is the Madh Fort also called Versova fort. It is believed that this fort was built by the Portuguese as a watchtower and later used as a training camp for cadets.

Kamla Nehru Park

The Kamla Nehru Park in Mumbai is a famous school picnic spot in Mumbai for its year round cool weather condition in contrast to the humid weather in rest of the Mumbai and the attractions for children like a shoe like structure, “Old Woman’s Shoe”. This old shoe structure amuses the kids to spend hours playing in it.

The Kanheri Caves
